Conductor pipe

Usually the 1^st and shortest casing string that is put into the well. Its purpose is to protect shallow sands from being contaminated by drilling fluids, and help prevent washouts which can easily occur near the surface because of loose, unconsolidated top soils, gravel beds, etc.
